چکیده

We present a counts-in-cells analysis of clustering in the optically selected Durham/UKST and Stromlo-APM Galaxy Redshift Surveys. Minimum variance estimates of the second moment, skewness (S3) and kurtosis (S4) of the count probability distribution are extracted from a series of volume limited samples of varying radial depth. The corresponding theoretical error calculation takes into account all sources of statistical error on the measurement of the moments, and is in good agreement with the dispersion over mock redshift catalogues. The errors that we find on S3 and S4 are larger than those quoted in previous studies, in spite of the fact that the surveys we consider cover larger volumes. S3 varies little with cell size, with values in the range 1.8−2.2 and errors ∼ < 20%, for cubical cells of side 3−20hMpc. Direct measurements of S3 are possible out to ∼ 35h Mpc, though with larger errors. A significant determination of S4 is only possible for one scale, l ∼ 6h Mpc, with S4 ≈ 5. We compare our results with theoretical predictions from N-body simulations of cold dark matter universes. Qualitatively, the skewness of the dark matter has the same form as that of the galaxies. However, the amplitude of the galaxy S3 is lower than that predicted for the dark matter. Our measurements of S3 are consistent with the predictions of a simple model in which initially Gaussian fluctuations in the dark matter evolve gravitationally, if a second order bias term is specified, in addition to the traditional linear bias, in order to describe the relation between the distribution of galaxies and dark matter.

The Durham / UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey - II . The Field Galaxy Luminosity Function

We present the results for the galaxy luminosity function as estimated from the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. This survey is magnitude limited to bJ ∼ 17, contains ∼2500 galaxies sampled at a rate of one in three and surveys a ∼4 × 10(hMpc) volume of space. The maximum likelihood parameters for a standard Schechter luminosity function are estimated to be M∗ bJ = −19.72 ± 0.09, α = −1.14±0...

The Durham / UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey - VI . Power spectrum analysis of clustering

We present the power spectrum analysis of clustering in the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. The Survey covers 1450 square degrees and consists of 2501 galaxy redshifts. The galaxies are sampled at a rate of 1 in 3 down to a magnitude limit of b J ∼ < 17 from COSMOS scanned UK-Schmidt plates. Our measurement of the power spectrum is robust for wavenumbers in the range 0.04 h Mpc −1 ≤ k ≤ 0.6...

The Local Hole in the Galaxy Distribution : New Optical

We present a new CCD survey of bright galaxies predominantly within the Northern and Southern strips of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) areas. We use the new CCD data to check the photographic photometry scales of the 2dFGRS, APM Bright Galaxy Catalogue, APM-Stromlo Redshift Survey, Durham-UKST (DUKST) survey, Millenium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find...

The Durham / UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey - III . Large Scale Structure via the 2 - Point Correlation Function

We have investigated the statistical clustering properties of galaxies by calculating the 2-point galaxy correlation function from the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. This survey is magnitude limited to bJ ∼ 17, contains∼2500 galaxies sampled at a rate of one on three and surveys a ∼4×10(hMpc) volume of space. We have empirically determined the optimal method of estimating the 2-point corre...

Power Spectrum Analysis of the Stromlo - APM

We test estimators of the galaxy power spectrum P (k) against simulated galaxy catalogues constructed from N-body simulations and we derive formulae to correct for biases. These estimators are then applied to compute the power spectrum of galaxies in the Stromlo-APM redshift survey. We test whether the amplitude of P (k) depends on galaxy luminosity, but nd no signiicant luminosity dependence e...
